Engineering a drive involves selecting the appropriate power module based on the motors and drive requirements, such as torque and speed ratio. The infeed module is chosen based on the DC link power needed by the group and the active power requirement of all the power modules, taking into account the coincidence factor, which is determined from the load duty cycle or experience value. The maximum permissible power for charging the DC link capacitors should also be considered.

In the case of feed axes, it is important to note that simply adding the motor outputs together will result in an over-dimensioned DC link. This is because feed axes are not operated at their rated torque and rated speed simultaneously and the feed drives are generally not all operated at the same time. The engineering sheet takes these factors into account through the use of the speed ratio and coincidence factor.

The power supply rating is determined by the gating and electronic points used to establish the load limits of the power supply. It is not possible to specify the power rating of a single voltage source as multiple power supplies may be connected together. If the number of gating or electronic points is exceeded, an additional power supply, known as a monitoring module, must be used.

The DC link capacitance has a maximum value that should not be exceeded when expanding the DC link capacitors. Dynamic operation, such as acceleration and deceleration, also requires the calculation of peak infeed power. For feed axes, the peak infeed power can be calculated using a formula that takes into account the DC link energy, EMF of the motor, DC link voltage, peak current, and max axis speed. For main spindles, the peak infeed power is calculated using a different formula that considers the peak power at the shaft of the main spindle motor, the efficiency of the motor, and the required power at the machine spindle.
