Recently, the SMC R&D and Innovation Center, a key municipal project in Beijing E-Town, has entered the exterior wall construction phase, with its façade beginning to take shape. The project is expected to be completed in August this year and will become SMC’s largest overseas R&D and innovation center upon completion.
“We resumed construction on the fifth day of the Lunar New Year, and progress has been smooth so far,” said a representative from SMC. With a total investment of 500 million yuan, the project covers approximately 30,000 square meters, including an R&D center building and a national-level laboratory capable of conducting performance and lifespan tests, clean environment experiments, and temperature-controlled experiments. Once operational, it will enhance SMC’s capabilities in the R&D and production support of pneumatic components, promote the design of new products tailored to the Chinese market, and cultivate high-end technical professionals.
SMC boasts the industry’s largest R&D, manufacturing, and service network, ranking first in both domestic and international market share. Its product portfolio now includes up to 12,000 basic component types and 700,000 specifications, widely used in automated production across semiconductors, automotive, electronics, high-end equipment, and other fields. In 1994, SMC established itself in Beijing E-Town by founding SMC (China) Co., Ltd., becoming the first wholly foreign-owned enterprise in the area.
“Since our establishment here, Beijing E-Town has provided comprehensive support in policy assistance, tailored services, and resource coordination, which has been crucial in helping us tackle challenges and achieve market growth. It has also strengthened our confidence in continuing to expand investment,” the representative added. In 2005, SMC established its China Technology Center in Beijing E-Town, one of its four global pneumatic technology R&D hubs, dedicated to pioneering research and development in pneumatic technology. In 2021, SMC completed the restructuring of its Chinese operations, designating SMC Investment Management Co., Ltd. in Beijing as its regional headquarters for China. The company has since built four factories in Beijing, three of which are located in Beijing E-Town, forming SMC’s largest global manufacturing base for pneumatic products. Now, with the R&D and Innovation Center commencing construction in 2025, SMC is accelerating into a new phase of deep integration between innovation-driven strategies and localized operations.
To date, SMC has established collaborations with over 10 universities, including Tsinghua University, Harbin Institute of Technology, Beijing Institute of Technology, Beihang University, and Shanghai Jiao Tong University. The completion of the R&D and Innovation Center project will significantly enhance SMC’s R&D capabilities and global competitiveness. It will also facilitate the continued introduction of SMC’s core processes and technologies into China, providing equipment support for the development of industries such as semiconductors, automotive, and electronics in the country.
Looking ahead, SMC is not only focused on capacity expansion but also on elevating its technological prowess. The representative stated, “We aim to leverage the new project to further strengthen SMC’s global competitiveness and localized service capabilities. We plan to introduce more globally competitive products to the Chinese market, providing higher-level equipment support for Beijing E-Town and the entire nation in developing strategic emerging industries and leveraging advantages in sectors like automotive manufacturing.”
